Memory Loss

Caring for someone with a progressive illness that causes memory loss is often scary, frustrating and challenging. Eldercare Services specializes in family counseling, companions and long-term care for individuals and families facing these issues.

All memory loss is not Alzheimer's disease. For any individual experiencing short-term memory loss, the first thing to do is to get a comprehensive medical evaluation to rule out reversible causes. The three most common are depression, infection and nutritional deficiency (including dehydration).

More than 5% of adults over 65, and nearly 50% of those over 85, have Alzheimer's disease. It affects not only short-term memory, but all areas of brain functioning. Brain tissue deteriorates as the disease advances.

A Care Manager will be the family guide as the individual moves through the stages of dementia, helping the family with behavioral and communication techniques, as well as providing options of care and resources for accessing care.
